OTTAWA, Ontario – OwnerShift Training, a restaurant consulting firm founded in 2018, launched its Restaurant Growth Accelerator podcast in late summer to address operational challenges facing independent restaurant owners across North America.
The podcast targets restaurant owners struggling with profitability and work-life balance. According to National Restaurant Association research, independent operators work an average of 63 hours per week while maintaining profit margins between 3 and 5 percent.
“Most restaurant owners work 60-plus hours per week and barely make any money and end up sacrificing their family life,” said Andrew Scott, who founded OwnerShift after growing his restaurant locations from one to four. “That was me for many years.”
The podcast format allows owners to access training content during commutes or food preparation. Edison Research data shows 42 percent of Americans listen to podcasts monthly, with business content showing strong engagement among the 35-to-54 age group.
Scott opened his first restaurant in 2007 and worked more than 80 hours weekly before developing operational systems that enabled expansion. He received Ottawa’s Top 40 Under 40 award in 2020 and served as chair of the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.
The company serves clients primarily in the United States and Canada, with additional presence in the United Kingdom and Australia. OwnerShift’s coaching model uses former restaurant owners and regional managers rather than traditional business consultants.
Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicates that while food service employment has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, owner-operator satisfaction metrics have declined. Restaurant owners report working longer hours than before 2020 while dealing with tighter margins.
The podcast addresses topics including labor cost management, food cost control and pricing strategy. Episodes feature operational advice specific to independent restaurants rather than franchise systems with corporate support structures.
OwnerShift Training provides operational coaching and training for independent restaurant owners focused on improving profitability and reducing working hours. The company was founded in Ottawa, Ontario, in 2018.
