Linbeck Group Earns 2017 Alliant Build America Award for Cincinnati Children’s Proton Therapy Center

“The Build America Awards are the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the U.S. We’re equally as excited about being honored in 2017 for Cincinnati Children’s as we have been on the 14 previous projects recognized by the Build Am”
Linbeck and joint venture partner Messer received a Build America Award for the Cincinnati Children’s Proton Therapy Center, which serves patients from around the world. The sheer size and scope of the medical technology at the core of this facility required pin-point precision from the entire construction team. Linbeck’s extensive experience with technology and Lean practices were reflected in the construction process.

Houston / Fort Worth / San Antonio, Texas – March 9, 2017 – Linbeck Group, a Texas-based, technology-driven building construction firm, received its fifteenth Alliant Build America Award yesterday from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). The 2017 award is for the Cincinnati Children’s Proton Therapy Center in the Building New ($10MM – $99MM) category.

Cincinnati Children’s, a world-renowned children’s hospital, which ranks third in the world for cancer treatment in children’s hospitals, was a Joint Venture Project between Messer Construction Company and Linbeck Group.

Located in Liberty Township, a suburb of Cincinnati, the Proton Therapy Center is a new two-story, 89,550 square-foot concrete structure with four proton therapy treatment rooms, a cyclotron vault, and a linear accelerator.

The Messer and Linbeck project teams overcame various project challenges and exceeded project goals by implementing Lean Construction methods, utilizing technological advancements and effectively harnessing the talents of an experienced and collaborative team through integrated design-build delivery. Because of the massive construction coordination efforts required, Linbeck utilized its virtual model so all trades were comfortable with extensive prefabrication initiatives designed to improve the project schedule and increase quality control. The hospital clinical spaces were delivered eight months ahead of schedule and the equipment installation was three weeks ahead of schedule.

In addition, there were heavy coordination efforts with the Europe-based architect, engineers and equipment vendors, as well as a group of physicists who designed the radiation areas. Coordination also included hospital users, radiation safety, health and safety, infection control, and hospital facilities groups.

The center now houses both Cincinnati Children’s and an adult partner hospital. Each occupies one treatment room and contributes to research in a third. A portion of the clinical space is also used to house a clinic for the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute. Cincinnati Children’s is the second pediatric hospital in the nation to construct such a facility, and the only one in the region.

“The Build America Awards are the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the U.S.,” said David Stueckler, CEO, Linbeck Group. “We’re equally as excited about being honored in 2017 for Cincinnati Children’s as we have been on the 14 previous projects recognized by the Build America Awards program.”

The Build America Awards highlight the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges representing all areas of construction evaluates an impressive number of submissions every year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques,  client satisfaction, and safety, among other criteria.

Linbeck representatives accepted the award, which was announced at the 98th Annual Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Convention in Las Vegas.
