DEHESA SCHOOL PARTNERS WITH CODE TO THE FUTURE TO PREP STUDENTS FOR TECHNOLOGY CENTERED FUTURES

Dehesa School in East County San Diego has teamed up with the nation’s first and leading comprehensive solution for computer science immersion in schools, Code to the Future, to ensure students are prepared for high-demand jobs that call for computer science solutions. Code to the Future makes students excited about academics as they are prepared for their future with a fun, computer based, curriculum.

At Dehesa, EAK to 1st grade, 2nd to 5th, and 6th to 8th grade all do different activities and learn different engineering and computer skills based on their grade level. Each grade level builds upon each other with the middle school students being the most advanced in their skills. Recently, the 2 through 5 kids have been working on block based coding to program robots to perform specific actions such as picking up items (like a claw machine) and flipping a cup (similar to “bottle flipping”).

Coding at Dehesa goes further than that, though. Younger students learn how to build a strong structure by overlapping LEGO bricks that will then be tied in with the programming concept later on in their education. LEGO building also ties in with another cycle in the coding program, pixels, as each brick is a set of commands that form a picture when connected together.

The middle school computer science curriculum for students in grades 6 to 8 is broken down into three cycles. During the first cycle, the 6th grade students learn block based coding using Scratch. The 7th and 8th grade students learn the coding language HTML in their first cycle, which they used to create a website based on social studies content.

During the second cycle, all of the students in 6th through 8th grade continue to build upon their understanding of block based coding to program an EV3 robot to successfully complete a task such as navigating a maze or overcoming an obstacle. The third cycle of the Code to the Future program at Dehesa is where the middle school students learn the coding language Javascript; including Minecraft for sixth grade students.

With Code to the Future, Dehesa is a part of an elite network of innovative school districts that integrate programming and game design to give students a well-rounded understanding of using technology to create. Dehesa School is proud to offer its students this opportunity to advance in technology at a young age to set themselves up for future success in a working environment where technology thrives.
