WildCats3D Launches High-resolution 3D Scanner MKII on Kickstarter

The MKII version of WildCats3D’s high-resolution 3D scanner is now available on Kickstarter at a discounted price. Designers, PI enthusiasts, artists, model makers and those who are looking for an affordable precision 3D scanner can pledge a specific amount and get special offers from WildCats3D. Since the3D scanner is equipped with Raspberry PI 3B+, it can provide wireless communication and scan independently of PCs. The full (Linux) Raspbian desktop, web browser, mail client and other features of the earlier version were retained.

WildCats3D has decided to proceed with their in-house production at an earlier date to maintain quality and flexibility as well as keep the launch cost as low as possible. The company has designed and built their laser cutter and 3D printers to launch at a lower funding target.WildCats3D has simplified the design of the 3D printer and switched to duel uprights to improve its scanning accuracy. The MKII uses a belt drive turntable, which ensures a smoother and more accurate rotation of the scanned object.

WildCats3D has looked at advanced technologies such as Photogrammetry and lidar to support their goal to create a highly accurate 3D scanner that can build and reproduce objects. However, these technologies lacked the accuracy required to create usable 3D printing models. WildCats3D’s use of line lasers has allowed them to achieve a depth accuracy of 0.05mm, better color detection and pan resolution from 0.05mm.

The MKII features a robust modular chassis design, a custom controller board and a light-box cover that allows scanning in different lighting environments. The scanner is rotational from 0.1⁰ and features WildCats3D’s PC-based scanner software and V2 8 Megapixel camera that would enable it to operate independently of computers. The scanner software tested on Windows 10 and communicates with the MKII through Wi-Fi or network. Users can input the scanning parameters including height, resolution, scan type and diameter.

Scans can be edited and exported STL files for printing using WildCats3D’s editing software. Users can remove aberrant points in the scans, conduct surface analysis and combine several scans together. The software comes with full instructions in PDF format.

WildCats3D’s open approach to product production allows customers on a tight budget to make parts for the 3D Scanner on their own. The software has been developed and priced to allow for continued development. WildCats3D hopes to be able to convert scans to 3D Studio meshes for game developers, offer more sophisticated scan scripts including multiple layers, resolutions and angles, complete A.I.-based surface correction to make surfaces curved or smooth flat, allow for auto beam correction and auto scan, convert to skin with thickness in millimeter and allow for points color blending when merging scans.
