On Sept. 16, West Hills High School’s Industrial Technology teacher Kathy Worley was one of five educators honored as “San Diego County Teachers of the Year.”
The 27th annual “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” celebrated San Diego County’s 22,000 public school teachers and the 44 Teacher of the Year nominees from around San Diego County.
The five finalists for 2017-18 County Teachers of the Year were selected from the 44 nominees, who were chosen based on student achievement, teaching philosophy, professional development and community involvement, knowledge of current issues in education, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability, and leadership.
Kathy Worley teaches five different Career Technical Education classes and has award-winning athletic coaching experience. In her woodshop class, manufacturing students learn to sketch, measure, calculate distances, and express themselves through fun and creative projects that test their ability to synthesize new and past manufacturing skills.
As a young student, Kathy had dreamed of becoming of a doctor, but found a passion for industrial arts after she was accidentally placed in a woodshop class instead of a swim class during one fateful summer more than 28 years ago.
Grossmont Union High School District teachers Kathy Worley and Daemein Patterson were recognized among the 44 nominees and were selected by the district for their commitment to students, teaching, and life-long learning.
Since 1974, 166 teachers have been named San Diego County Teacher of the Year, 21 went on to win California Teacher of the Year, and three were named National Teacher of the Year.
The 27th annual “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” was broadcast live from the Balboa Theatre and sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE).
