VehicleHistory.com, a company that assists consumers when buying or selling a used car, will now offer instant VIN reports for all vehicles registered in California, the company announced yesterday.

“We believe in transparency when it comes to the used car industry, which is why our company was founded in the first place,” said Vanessa Hernandez, a Vehicle History spokesperson. “So the decision to provide open-access reports that a consumer can look at instantly was a no-brainer for us.”

Hernandez explained that visitors to the company’s California VIN report page will need to choose from a menu of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) registered in the state. Once the number is located, the report appears in one click.

“As long as the customer has the VIN, they will get all the info that’s available,” said Hernandez. “Depending on the age of the car and the records maintained, they can immediately see everything they need to know, including the first name of the owner, the price paid for the car, the transmission type, fuel efficiency, safety ratings, and even how much the average labor costs are for repairs.”

There are several reasons why consumers would need such a service, Hernandez said.

“In speaking with some of our customers, we found that many wanted the information on the spot, while making a decision about a specific used car they were looking at right then,” she said. “Others like to get a quick overview on several cars they’re thinking of buying, to compare features and other variables. And then there are private car sellers, who want to see what the buyers will find out about their car, and how much to ask for it when placing an ad.”

The company offers its California VIN reports for free.

“The information we provide is a matter of public record, so the information belongs to everyone,” said Hernandez. “We don’t feel the need to charge our customers simply because we are making it easier for them to obtain an instant VIN report.”
