Consumers can check their driving records for errors free of charge.

VehicleHistory.com, a private company that provides information related to driving to consumers, has launched a free driving records search service, the company announced today.

“Making sure driving records are correct and up to date is incredibly important to consumers,” said Vehicle History spokesperson Vanessa Hernandez. “What’s in a driver’s records can affect many parts of a person’s life – yet most people don’t know what is there, or if it is even remotely accurate.”

Personal driving records are used to set car insurance rates and to screen employees for jobs and promotions, she explained. In many states they are available to anyone who expresses a desire to do a background check on a person.

“While anyone can get their driving records on their own, it can be a complicated process in many states,” Hernandez said. “Beyond that, there are generally fees involved which can be difficult to part with in the current economy. Because these are public records, we want to find a way to make them available to the public at no cost to them at all.”

Mistakes get into driving records in many different ways, the company said. Sometimes they are simple clerical errors. Sometimes computer glitches can cause an entry to be made on the wrong person’s records. And in other cases, a person could be a victim of identity theft.

“If someone has managed to steal someone’s personal details, getting a driver’s license in the victim’s name is not very difficult at all,” she said. “Someone out there may be stacking up a lot of violations in an innocent driver’s name, causing their insurance rates to skyrocket and making it difficult or impossible for them to find a job. A driver won’t know if that is happening until they look at their records and find out whether or not they are accurate.”

The company will also provide information to consumers about how they can fix errors in their driving records, she said.
