U.S. hardwood veneer and plywood imports totaled 2.5 billion USD, which was 243 million USD (11%) more than the year before.
From 2007 to 2015, U.S. hardwood veneer and plywood imports showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in 2009 was followed by growth for the remainder of the period. However, U.S. imports are still in the recovery phase of the economic cycle. They have to grow another 3% in order to reach the pre-recession level of 2007.
Despite fierce competition, the U.S. continues to be one of the most attractive destinations for overseas suppliers.
In 2015, China (1,059 thousand tonnes) was the main supplier of hardwood veneer and plywood to the U.S., comprising 58% of total U.S. imports. It was followed by Indonesia (11%), Russia (8%), and Canada (7%). China significantly strengthened its position in the U.S. import structure, while Canada saw its share reduced.
From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of hardwood veneer and plywood. Net US imports of hardwood veneer and plywood showed a downward trend over the period under review. In 2015, this industry ran a trade deficit of 1.5 billion USD, which amounted to approximately 60% of gross imports.
