In 2015, the U.S. exported 2,253 million USD, 4% under the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2015, U.S. books exports showed mixed dynamics. A slight drop in 2009 was followed by a recovery over the next three years, peaking in 2012, until exports turned downwards and decreased steadily through to the end of the period under review.
In 2012, U.S. books exports reached their 2008 pre-recession level. However, after a slight setback in 2011, exports continued to fall, eventually dropping even lower than its 2009 pre-crisis level.
This recent steady downward trend of exports has constrained domestic manufacturers, reducing the opportunities for growth by means of foreign markets.
In 2015, the main destinations of U.S. books exports were Canada (41%), the U.K. (20%), distantly followed by China (5%) and Mexico (5%). The share exported to the UK increased (+6 percentage points), while the share sent to Canada illustrated negative dynamics (-4 percentage points) from 2007 to 2015.
Prior to 2009, the U.S. was a net importer of books. However, from 2009 to 2015 it consistently was a net exporter, with a trade surplus that fluctuated somewhat wildly over the mentioned period. In 2015 this industry ran a small trade surplus of 187 million USD.
