Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theater Program called Peace Signs visited Union House Elementary in the Elk Grove Unified School District.

Schools in the Elk Grove Unified School District are determined to prevent bullying before it starts. Union House Elementary School and its partner, Kaiser Permanente, recently introduced new skills to students to resolve conflicts and bullying in a positive way. Through educational workshops and theatrical performances, Kaiser Permanente’s Peace Signs program aims to help students in grades 3-6 overcome situations specific to their region and school. Kaiser Permanente’s Peace Signs program is new to the Northern California region, and helps pinpoint issues that children in the region might face.

At the Peace Signs event, students at Union House Elementary learned the Peace Signs Stoplight Solution conflict resolution model and how to respond to bullying in real life situations. Students also were given the tools to learn about empathy, understanding people and finding respect for those around you. One goal of Peace Signs is also to teach students the importance of getting help from a trusted adult when facing issues with bullying and violence.

The Peace Signs program schedule kicked off with an assembly for students in 3rd through 6th grade during school hours, which included a 40 minute live theatre performance of a conflict and how it got resolved. Workshops were in the following days from the assembly and were led by Kaiser Permanente educators where students were given the chance to roleplay in different conflict and resolution scenarios using the bullying and violence prevention skills they witnessed in the assembly performance. The events concluded with Family Night where families, educators, and community agencies came together to learn about the Peace Signs program and share resources.

Kaiser Permanente is proud to use the powerful medium of theater to make education a positive experience for kids. Their educational theatre programs use “creativity, interaction and immediacy of theater to empower and inspire audiences through stories and modeling of positive behavior.” Kaiser Permanente developed these programs to work with schools and different organizations to customize programs to specific needs of schools.
