Uncommon: A Black Man’s Journey by Mel King

“Uncommon: A Black Man’s Journey book cover”
As the title suggest, Mel King has had many “uncommon” experiences and this book only begins to document the beginning of them. In high school, he held an elected office, made the honor roll, lettered in sports, and wrote for the school newspaper–all while having a part time job and contributing to the family household. He is a Black American and in high school, his friends didn’t use the word, “uncommon,” but often said that he was different.

Author Shares His Uncommon Experiences

The world should be safe for diversity. Over time, many variances that caused gaps among many parties have been spanned, but in the corporate world, race still causes a disconnection. Author Mel King shares his many varied and challenging experiences through his novel entitled Uncommon.

Mel King opens his life to the public as he shares his uncommon experiences. Growing up, people would always consider him as someone different, and especially so, being a Black American. His earlier experiences were a key indicator that he definitely was making it to the top, e.g., in high school, he held an elected office, made the honor roll, lettered in sports and wrote for his high school newspaper – all while working a part-time job to contribute to his family household. Undoubtedly, he was making things happen more than others – as for him, triumph definitely knows no color. He is truly an epitome of achievement. When Mel King entered the Air Force and served in South East Asia, he continued to break grounds for people of color. At every assignment, in some form or fashion, he had been recognized for performance, dedication and his leadership ability.

The author has been praised by many people – those who have witnessed his determination to defy racism in the corporate (books to follow) world, here in the United States of America. His efforts in showing that reaching success has nothing to do with color. He is proud of where he had come from and these things were catalyst to his writing Uncommon whichsets the stage in documentingthe challenges that Black Americans still have in Corporate America today. As the readers gets to know the author’s struggles, challenges, and successes in his career, they will recognize the importance of persistence, maintaining integrity, and doing one’s best to beat the odds!
