February 9, 2017 – At this time of great uncertainty on the environmental scene, author Jake Plante has written a timely new book about environmental protection entitled Uncle Sam and Mother Earth: Shaping the Nation’s Environmental Path.

The book chronicles the modern environmental movement citing the accomplishments of trailblazers like Rachel Carson, Lady Bird Johnson, Stewart Brand, Dennis Hayes, Russell Train, Bill Ruckelshaus, Al Gore, and Bill McKibben.  While each of these individuals has made a unique mark on environmental awareness, they all understood that the more you know about government and the environmental process, the more effective you will be. 

Dr. Plante uses his 30 years of federal environmental experience to describe how federal agencies comply with environmental laws and encourage management to plan ahead to avoid environmental impacts.  His storytelling offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of how agencies like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, and the Federal Aviation Administration conduct environmental impact assessments and carry out their wide-ranging environmental responsibilities.

The detailed environmental topics of the book include air quality, noise, renewable energy, and climate change.   In addition, the book delves into the personal question of how to achieve the greatest impact on environmental policy.  While working inside the system to promote change and improve environmental action is essential, Plante acknowledges that civil disobedience is also a tool for pressuring government decision-makers.  Indeed, the author’s first-hand account of the 1977 occupation of the Seabrook nuclear power plant has a prophetic ring with respect to current controversies like the Keystone pipeline and Standing Rock in North Dakota.

Jake Plante is an author and environmental activist. He received his doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts and spent 33 years working on environmental policy for federal and local government, including 27 years at the FAA.
