Tsvia Bar Abarbanel that used to perform in the Afro-American music scene of LA in the mid-’60s” is back with a World premiere! “THE PROPHETIC SPIRIT”
Tsvia was born in Radda, in South East of Yemen in the late 40′. She immigrated to Israel with her parents and settled in the north of the country. She was raised in a traditional Yemenite home surrounded by the culture and the traditions of Yemen. In her adult life, she was one of the leaders of the legendary Group of Yemenite dancers ‘Inbal’, and after her success in Israel as a singer and dancer in the 60s’, She continued in the united states with a unique show that combines jazz and ethnic music.
Her musical talent was so explosive she was embraced by local musicians & by important artists such as Sammy Davis jr. Andy Williams & Donovan and appeared alongside them.
Now, after 50 years she is back with a new show and an album LP and a CD.
Today, the combination of jazz and ethnic music is obvious, but when Tsvia did it in the late 1960s, it was an original and incomprehensible move. No one in the young Israeli music industry showed any interest in it, and some of the musicians who participated in the recording saw it as nothing more than exotic, and yet, fifty years later, this music has a new surprising life. Exotic or not, this is a fascinating little station in the history of Israeli music.
“I don’t know how to explain it. I Just know that when I heard Tsivia sing for the first time, I had chills. That’s all that matters.” (Nitay Zeliker, Drummer)
Performances are at 8 PM on Oct 19 and 4 PM on Oct. 20. The Fais Do-Do Ballroom is located at 5253 West Adams Blvd in Los Angeles, next to Fais Do-Do nightclub.
