Mental Health America published the results of an extensive research project that analyzed the mental health scores of 19 industries within the U.S. Manufacturing ranked within the bottom 10% of industries with a subpar mental health score.
Manufacturing employees face a unique combination of pressures that can contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Even before COVID-19 the success of manufacturing labor is determined by productivity, efficiency, and output, requiring long hours and shift-based schedules that allow little if any time for flexibility or recovery. These jobs also tend to be physically demanding, repetitive, and even dangerous. Add COVID-19 mental health into those factors and a recipe for serious consequences cannot be over-estimated.
