Sea Farm is an aquaculture documentary that highlights the precarious state of the oceans and marine protein in a constantly changing climate. The documentary was first introduced on Kickstarter to spread awareness and to raise $16,000 in post-production funding to get the documentary to the public.  The project has received great response from the backers and has collected more than half its fundraising goal, but will only be funded if it reaches its goal by March 27th, 2019.

Sea Farm is an informational documentary emphasizing how seafood farming can help restore the oceans and secure sustainable food and jobs for future generations. The creators of this documentary, Nathan Saucier and Sequoyah Leaf, take the viewer on an immersive journey, showcasing the processes that make farmed fish and plants possible. The film covers a relatively new industry during a time of explosive growth in Maine.

Until recently, Maine has relied mainly on capture fisheries (traditional fishing), which has resulted in many species being overfished. The project creators believe that sea farming may be an effective solution to fill this gap and create a sustainable industry, without creating a negative effect on the environment. The film covers the various possibilities and alternatives to achieve an effective balance between seafood consumption and thriving marine life.

In addition, ocean acidification and rising sea temperatures have made wild fishing even more difficult. Sea Farming or Aquaculture, however, can be done in a controlled environment to ensure a continued supply of sustainable marine protein to consumers. Furthermore, sea farming can also have remedial effects in the ocean on a local level. For instance, shellfish and kelp are proven to improve water quality and help offset the effects of climate change.

Maine is known for its seafood production, and Nathan and Sequoyah see this as an opportunity to create a project that impacts the environment as well as the coastal community in a positive manner. More information about the project can be found on their official Kickstarter page.
