The South Asian Chamber of Commerce (SACC) Awards Mayor Sylvester Turner with the Houston Strong Award.

The South Asian Chamber of Commerce (SACC), a Houston based non-profit organization whose mission is to build community through business and foster relationships between South Asian entrepreneurs and professionals within the broader Houston community, hosted their 25th Anniversary Gala on October 24th, 2018 at the Crowne Plaza Northwest-Brookhollow.

Houston, Texas – The South Asian Chamber of Commerce (SACC) hosted their 25th Anniversary Gala last week which included award-wining British broadcaster, journalist and author Mehdi Hasan as the headline speaker as well as the annual presentation of the Entrepreneur and Businessperson of the Year Award. This year’s gala also included the presentation of the ‘Houston Strong Award’ for outstanding service and impact during Hurricane Harvey. The recipient of the award was none other than Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Sylvester Turner is the 62nd and current mayor to the City of Houston. After completing his bachelor’s degree at University of Houston, Turner went to pursue his higher education at the Harvard Law School. During the span of 27 years, Turner served as a Member of the Texas House of Representatives.

“Our goal is to recognize an individual who made an outstanding impact during hurricane Harvey recovery efforts and we could think of no one more fitting than Mayor Turner for this award,” said Nomaan Husain, SACC’s Co-Chairman.

Mayor Turner thanked the audience and explained how in coordination with Harris County Judge Emmet, they set up the Greater Houston Community Foundation, which focused on administering long-term disaster relief-efforts. The Hurricane Harvey Relief fund was designed for reconstruction and other relief efforts in which victims were able to find resources for legal and behavioral health needs. A year after the disaster, Mayor Turner and Councilman Greg Travis toured around neighborhoods to discuss recovery and resilience with residents where Turner promised to help the affected residents with reconstruction from the $1.14 billion of federal funds provided by the government.

With a turnout of over 450 attendees, SACC’s ‘Houston Strong’ Gala was an evening of excitement, networking and celebration in honor of the organization’s 25th anniversary, for the South Asian community, and the City of Houston.
