The demand for ibogaine, an alkaloid derived from the Tabernanthe iboga plant, is surging internationally, particularly due to its potential in addiction treatment. However, this growing demand has sparked urgent concerns over the preservation of the iboga plant, a species that holds deep spiritual and cultural significance in Central Africa, particularly in Gabon and Cameroon.
For centuries, iboga has been a cornerstone in African spiritual practices, notably in initiation ceremonies and healing rituals among indigenous communities. Its roots and bark are prized for their medicinal properties, especially the alkaloid ibogaine, which has recently gained attention as a treatment for addiction. As research into ibogaine’s therapeutic benefits progresses, the pressure on the wild iboga population has intensified.

The iboga tree faces a growing threat of extinction, exacerbated by over-harvesting for medicinal purposes. The bark and roots, the primary source of ibogaine, are increasingly extracted to meet global demand. Alongside this, the forests of Central Africa are already grappling with deforestation caused by logging and agricultural expansion. Now, the additional pressure of plant extraction risks further damaging the delicate ecosystems and eroding the integrity of the landscape.
In the face of this looming crisis, one company of Iboga Farmers is taking proactive steps to ensure the survival of this precious plant while maintaining its cultural relevance. Getibogaine, an online enterprise specializing in iboga products, is leading the charge in preserving iboga by establishing sustainable practices in Cameroon, one of the few regions where the plant can thrive.

Harry, the chief agro technician at Getibogaine, explains the challenges involved in cultivating iboga. “Growing iboga is incredibly difficult. It requires a highly controlled environment. We had to use propagators to help the seeds sprout, which was a solution that emerged after several failed attempts outdoors,” he says. The company has taken numerous measures to ensure the plant’s survival, including using wood chips in the incubation process to facilitate easy transplantation once the plants reach 2 cm in height.

Once the seedlings are successfully transferred to polythene bags, they are moved to the plantation, where they will be allowed to grow for about ten years before they can be harvested. The slow maturation of the plant ensures that the best quality of ibogaine is extracted while also preserving the plant’s longevity for future generations.

Getibogaine’s efforts extend beyond just the cultivation of the plant. Their sustainable approach is rooted in the goal of allowing local communities to continue benefiting from iboga while safeguarding the plant’s cultural and medicinal value. This approach also addresses concerns over the commercialization of iboga, which risks overshadowing its sacred role in African spiritual practices.
“Iboga sustainability is about more than just protecting the plant—it’s about preserving a culture,” Harry continues. “We must ensure that the spiritual and medicinal qualities of iboga are not lost in the pursuit of profit. It’s a delicate balance, but it’s crucial for future generations.”

While ibogaine has brought hope to addiction treatment clinics in Mexico, where many Americans seek alternative solutions to their substance use issues, the delicate balance between commercial demand and cultural preservation remains a critical challenge. Getibogaine’s initiative stands as a testament to the possibility of sustainable practices in the face of growing global interest in this sacred plant.
As the world looks to iboga for new healing solutions, the responsibility lies in ensuring that its roots remain firmly planted in its cultural heritage, guaranteeing that the plant’s true value is respected and preserved for generations to come.
