THE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF DEATH, GRIEF AND AN UNACCEPTED REALITY WITHIN ‘A 2ND CHANCE’ – DIRECTED BY SUSANNE BIER

“A 2ND CHANCE // ROCK SALT RELEASING”
Dr. Michael Bader, D.M.H. and Clinical Psychologist questions Susanne Bier’s ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ – “What happens when you deny reality? What are the psychological consequences when someone refuses to face painful feelings or perceptions, when someone cannot face loss?”

Los Angeles, CA – August 6, 2018 – In A 2ND CHANCE, the denial of loss causes people to do crazy things, but facing reality can even be worse.” – Dr. Michael Bader, D.M.H. and Clinical Psychologist for Medium.

Directed by Oscar-winning and Emmy-nominated director, Susanne Bier (The Night Manager, In A Better World), A 2ND CHANCE (aka En chance til) is a brooding, dark Nordic noir that dives deep into human nature’s battle against tragedy, while tackling the complex, moral dilemmas of adulthood by showing just how far people will go when faced with death. Analyzing the psychological consequences when someone cannot face loss inside the film of A 2ND CHANCE, Dr. Michael Bader, D.M.H. observed, “Everyone is running from the truth. No one can mourn his or her losses because no one can really accept reality.”

“Sharp and painful to watch,” Dr. Bader summarizes the plot of A 2ND CHANCE as “two couples, each with a baby, a study in apparent contrasts.” Written by Ander Thomas Jensen (In A Better World), Danish drama follows Detective Andreas (Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Game of Thrones’ Jamie Lannister) and his drunken, divorcee partner Simon (Ulrich Thomsen), who are alerted of a domestic disturbance at two young junkies’ apartment where they discover a baby boy covered in his own excrement and suffering from dreadful child neglect. But, Andreas’ life begins to unravel into moral and ethical disarray when his own infant son suddenly passes, the young father finds his morals blurring as he is forced to confront the difference between right and wrong. “Andreas, fearing for his wife’s sanity […and] under the pressure of these conflicts, he hatches the bizarre strategy of switching babies, confident that no one will ever know,” detailed Dr. Bader. A 2ND CHANCE captures the unthinkable, and how easily we lose our grasp on justice when life is hanging by a thread. Analyzing the inability to face loss and face grief, Dr. Bader observed, “Everyone in the film suffers from an inability to face reality and grieve. Successful mourning can only occur if one confronts and accepts the reality of loss, and everyone in the film struggles to do so,” wrote Dr. Bader.

“In A 2ND CHANCE, reality is challenged, distorted, rearranged, or denied with tragic results. However, it finally offers the viewer some stories of redemption and healthy mourning. Simon cleans up his act. And Andreas finally faces the tragic consequences of his wife, Anne’s, psychopathology. He returns Sofus to his true mother and eventually is a witness to their rehabilitation. Such growth is possible only when reality is squarely accepted on its own terms, when pain and loss are truly mourned. A 2ND CHANCE shows us the price we pay when this fails to happen,” concluded Dr. Bader. A 2nd CHANCE is now exclusively available on Amazon – watch it here today: https://amzn.to/2A4NlqH.
