HSK Level 7~9 focuses on the competence of candidates who use Chinese as a second language to carry out proper and decent social communication on complex topics in the fields of social life and academic research. The exam is designed and developed according to the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (GF0025-2021) (hereinafter referred to as the “Grading Standards”), which is a volume of three levels, including Level 7, Level 8 and Level 9, divided according to the examination results, with Level 9 being the highest level.

HSK Level 7~9 has a total of 98 questions, which comprehensively test candidates’ five language skills, listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. The HSK Level 7~9 test report provides six scores in listening, reading, writing, translating, speaking and a total score, as well as a grade assessment result.

Why is HSK Level 7~9 developed?

The existing HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 examinations basically meet the needs of foreign Chinese language learners for elementary and intermediate level tests, but for the students studying in China for the master’s and doctor’s degrees with Chinese language majors from various countries, and the personnel using Chinese to carry out academic research, economic, cultural, and technological exchanges, there was no corresponding assessment tools for advanced Chinese language level to speakers of other languages. Therefore, according to the “Grading Standards”, on the basis of maintaining the stability of the existing 6-level examinations, HSK are added to Level 7~9, forming an examination grading system with “three levels and nine bands”.

The HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 currently being implemented will not be adjusted in the near future, and they will continue to be implemented stably. The examination validity, examination content, reference vocabulary and examination form will remain unchanged. The results of candidates having participated in HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 are still valid, and the validity of the obtained certificates remains unchanged. Teaching materials and courses developed according to HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 can continue to be used. In the following two or three years, HSK Level 1 ~ Level 6 will be gradually adjusted according to the “Grading Standards” and the actual situation of Chinese language learners in various countries. In general, they will continue to adhere to the “learner-centered” concept, stick to the principles of combining examination and education and progressing step by step, to make appropriate adjustments in accordance with the “Grading Standards”.
