San Diego, CA – July 31, 2026 – The Estate Lawyers is proud to announce that Partner Kimberly R. McGhee, Esq. participated in the California Lawyers Association’s prestigious Week in Legal London, serving as a featured speaker on issues surrounding mental capacity, conservatorships, and protective proceedings.

Ms. McGhee was invited to represent California as an authority on conservatorship and protective matters, joining an esteemed international panel that included District Tribunal Judge Lise Buckingham of the United Kingdom’s First-tier Tribunal, Health, Education and Social Care Chamber, and Dr. Joan Rutherford, Chief Medical Member of the United Kingdom’s Mental Health Tribunal.

Together, the panel presented: When Mental Disorder and Issues of Competency Meet the Law – Harmonizing Humanity and Justice.

The presentation explored the intersection of mental health, capacity, and legal protections, offering comparative perspectives between California and the United Kingdom while emphasizing the importance of preserving dignity, autonomy, and justice for vulnerable individuals.

“It was an incredible opportunity to discuss how different legal systems approach some of the most challenging and deeply human issues we encounter as attorneys,” said McGhee. “The thoughtful questions and lively discussions reinforced just how important these topics are, not only within trust and estate law, but across every area of legal practice.”

The program brought together retired judges and attorneys from throughout California, including practitioners in business litigation, criminal defense, securities litigation, and other specialties. While many attendees did not regularly encounter conservatorship or capacity issues in their own practices, the presentation generated significant interest and meaningful conversations about protecting aging clients, business owners, and vulnerable individuals facing cognitive decline or exploitation.

Following the conference, Ms. McGhee has already received inquiries from fellow attorneys seeking guidance on capacity-related issues affecting their own clients, underscoring the growing need for experienced counsel in conservatorship, elder protection, and fiduciary litigation matters.

The trip also included a memorable and unexpected encounter with The Right Honourable Robert John Reed, Baron Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, an experience Ms. McGhee described as “a memorable moment and a true privilege.”

The Estate Lawyers remains committed to advancing thought leadership in trust, estate, elder protection, and conservatorship litigation, both within California and on the international stage. As California’s population continues to age and issues of competency, financial exploitation, and protective proceedings become increasingly common, the firm continues to serve as a resource for attorneys and families navigating these complex matters.

For attorneys seeking guidance on conservatorships, elder abuse, fiduciary misconduct, or capacity-related disputes, The Estate Lawyers welcomes opportunities to collaborate and provide strategic support to clients in need.
