As part of recognition of Juneteenth, on June 22, 2023, the virtual presentation of The Black Mermaid: Topaz’s First Integration with Jacqueline Banks, Ed ’10 (Ed.D), and Kendra Banks will take place during the Alumni Author Book Talks at Johns Hopkins University. The virtual event is sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations Lifelong Learning and Identity & Shared Interest, celebrating Juneteenth.
“The Black Mermaid Topaz’s First Integration is more than just a children’s book. It is teaching and learning resource equipped with graphic organizers, project-based learning ideas and conversation prompts and questions . The book even includes a coloring book!” said Kendra Banks, president of Royalty is Black. It is part of the Black Mermaid League initiative to build the self esteem of Black girls, especially ages 0 to 6 using the arts and academics. The book is accompanied with a song called “Flow Those ABCs” by The Black Mermaid.
The story in the book shows how a person can “integrate” into a new situation and survive.. The book is based on the real-life experiences of co-author and Black Mermaids education consultant Dr. Jaky B. “The Black Mermaid League is all about raising the self-esteem of Black girls using the arts and academics With the book, readers can follow Topaz’s journey as she transitions to Land School and successfully navigates the challenges of her first day,” said Dr. Jaky B.
There will also be an engaging Q&A segment after the presentation with the authors. Please use this link to register: https://events.jhu.edu/form/alumni-author-book-talk-dr-jaky-
