Suzanne McCorkell: Mother’s Day Gift From Hell

Queensland ‘home whisperer’ mediates when wife is nearly robbed of wellbeing after husband pulls the pin on promised home makeover project – just before Mother’s Day.

A recent UK study revealed that home disagreements can spark divorce. Nearly half of couples said they argued over the design and decoration of a new bathroom or kitchen. Two out of five admitted to lying about liking décor for the sake of domestic bliss. And sadly one in eight said they had split over styling clashes.

Suzanne McCorkell, Queensland’s only holistic interior stylist, is making Mother’s Day dreams reality by saving money and potential divorce statistics for a huge number of couples who cannot agree on a home makeover.

“Our homes make us emotional, so it’s not surprising. More often than not, men are reluctant for change, especially where there is a price tag attached,” said Ms McCorkell, a former Brisbane-based counsellor.

“Women look differently at the house especially once the children have moved out. Many desire a less practical and far more beautiful space, whereas men are happy with the way it is.

“I’ve had clients who haven’t spoken to each other for weeks. In fact, that was my husband and I a few weeks ago!” She laughed.

There is so much more to a beautiful home than spending up on designer trending styles. When it comes to traditional interior design, the tendency is to focus on the concrete aspects within the home, the building, expensive furniture, furnishing and objects rather than the more intangible things like light, air, colour, sound, and aroma.

“I created my business to bridge the gap between interior design and having no help at all. Interior design can sometimes be rigid, whereas home styling is a collaborative process,” Ms McCorkell said. “It’s much less about keeping up with the Jones’ and much more about a sense of identity and belonging. There are so many ways of working with a space without having to spend a cent.”

“Lots of people are in the same situation. They don’t want the expense or formality of an interior designer, but they need a hand to move forward.

“More often than not, I feel like a therapist mediating between spouses who are in disagreement. Thing is, ultimately, everybody wants the same outcome – a lovely home.”

Rather than focus on material objects, Suzanne starts with the more subtle elements of a space. The goodies at the end are icing on the cake, and her top 5 styling tips include:

  • Declutter
  • Ensure the correct size furniture is in the correct size space, allowing flow
  • Lighting.  Natural – as much as possible; Bright bulbs in high use areas; Warm and subtle in relaxing areas.
  • Sufficient soft furnishings, floor and window coverings for optimal acoustics Plants.  Indoor plants have astonishing health benefits.  Thriving indoor plants indicate good Feng Shui

As Suzanne puts it: “Transforming a space can be as simple as decluttering and moving furniture about. Even small changes can make everything fall into place – including marital harmony.”
