Stem cell therapy has the potential to transform the science of medicine. R. Shane Palmer, MD and other cosmetic physicians have a keen interest in applying this technology to rejuvenate the skin. A Belgium surgeon, Dr. Patrick Tonnard and colleagues at the University Hospital of Brussels, have conducted trials in which they processed adipose (fat) tissue obtained from liposuction and then injected the resulting stem cells directly into the dermis of the skin of the face and the décolleté (lower neck/upper chest). They witnessed “remarkable improvements in skin quality” out to 6 months and beyond in the 67 patients treated. They coined this procedure “nanofat injections”. This surgeon published his results so others could benefit from the rejuvenating effects he witnessed. Dr. Palmer is following this surgeon’s protocol to trial the method in his Fredericksburg office.
Stem Cell Therapy is not new and has been applied to many areas, especially in orthopedics to treat arthritis, for several years now and has been shown to be safe. Some believe it has the potential to treat a plethora of medical conditions across the full spectrum of organ systems. Although exciting and promising, much of this is anecdotal and needs more study to become widely available.
More recently this breakthrough technology is being applied to the skin for its rejuvenating potential. The evidence for its ability to efface old scars, diminish wrinkles and rejuvenate damaged skin has been clearly demonstrated, although treatments are still considered experimental.
“The risks have been very low and the potential benefit is great, therefore I am going to begin offering stem cell injection into the skin for select patients. There will be no charge for the stem cell injections in my practices trial phase. The criteria to select patients will be those already undergoing fat harvesting via a paid liposuction procedure who also have skin in the face, neck, hands, or décolleté that clearly demonstrates signs of aging” – R. Shane Palmer, MD
Proper informed consent from patients will be necessary and close follow-up is expected. Photography will be performed to compare the pre and post treatment areas of stem cell therapy.
