Students turn Mountain Concert into Large Outdoor Music & Arts Festival

San Luis Obispo, CA – It isn’t typical for college students to organize a music festival that gains thousands of fans over a short period of time, but something special is brewing on the Central Coast of California.

What started as a mountain top camping trip to celebrate the end of the school year, has evolved into a music and arts festival that is expecting over 4,000 in attendance this Spring.  On May 5th from 2-9PM, the tenth ‘Shabang’ will take place at Laguna Park in San Luis Obispo, CA. Featuring a 9 band lineup including Winter, Summer Twins, and Sugar Candy Mountain, Shabang will be one of the biggest festival’s to ever come through San Luis Obispo, and is quickly gaining more traction amongst locals and students.

Shabang has been through quite the progression over the years, and is truly the definition of DIY. Beginning as a bi-annual concert that was hosted on top of a mountain deemed ‘Cuesta Ridge’, the founders gained notoriety after attempting a show in a rainstorm with gale force winds. When things went south, they caught themselves in a heap of trouble with the federal government after news spread of a raging concert series that had been taking place on U.S. Forestry Service land. Facing legal action and a loss of location, it was time to reset; the show had to go on. The founders decided to throw a legal concert at Laguna Lake Park – one they thought might jeopardize the euphoric atmosphere of what started Shabang in the first place. Although the days of a mythical, rebellious rockfest tucked in the hills were over – fans responded well to the continued DIY architecture, better accessibility, and more adequate space at Laguna Lake. It turned out to be a perfect transition into creating a legitimate festival, without losing the authenticity that created their loyal fan base.

With a focus around Indie & Alternative Rock, Shabang draws a strong local crowd with unrivaled energy for the music scene in SLO. In addition to the gorgeous location at Laguna, Shabang 10 will be equipped with full food and beverage vendors, art installations, a handcrafted main stage, and a silent disco. Sponsors include El Skel Art, 805 Cantina, 25 Under 25 Film Fest, Art Central, and SLO Brew where an after party will be hosted. Shabang has a special connection with charity, allowing their fans to vote on a local non-profit to donate to the week before each festival. They will be teaming up with SloDoCo for their April ‘Charity Donut’, where 50% of all Shabang Donut sales will go towards the charity of the fan’s choosing. Shabang has raised thousands of dollars for local charity and is a key facet to the organization’s mission:

Shabang strives to create a community that gives aspiring artists, musicians & entrepreneurs the opportunity to flourish, building a platform that embraces young talent. As a grassroots movement, we believe everybody plays a part. Whether it’s performing, voting for charities to support, or sharing passions, we all contribute to the awe-inspiring experience that is Shabang.
