Students in the Lakeside Union School District get creative and explore STEM subjects through after school robotics programs. The robotics program provides opportunities for students to explore multiple pathways and understand the benefits of STEM subjects in their lives or future careers. In the programs, students participate in valuable activities such as making connections with people, networking with groups, and creating a platform where others can discover STEAM and its importance.

At Tierra del Sol Middle School, the program supports over 50 students who participate in challenges and competitions. The students in the program are able to create a bond with their fellow students and develop excellent teamwork skills. Through different projects, students gain experience not only with robotics but with business and engineering as well.

Some of the experience and skills gained from the Robotics club, come from competitions that club members can participate in. The major competitions that students take part in include the First Lego League Competition, VEX Robotics Competition, and the VEX IQ Competition.

At the First Lego League Competition, students work to solve theme-based challenges and engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering. The competition focuses on six core values, discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork, and fun.

The VEX Robotics Competition challenges teams of students to design and build a robot to play against other teams in entertaining engineering challenges. Tournaments are held on a local, regional, national, and world scale.

At the VEX IQ Competition, students are faced with open-ended robotics and research-based projects to complete. Through these challenges, students can learn through hands-on experience about science, technology, math, and engineering.

To support the Robotics team in all of these events and competitions, there is a business team of students dedicated to providing personnel management, branding, media, and outreach event planning. A few of the events the business team has coordinated include the Girl Powered STEAM Day, STEAM Maker Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, as well as involvement in the S.T.E.P. Day for elementary students.
