Borrego Springs Unified School District is thrilled at the rate test scores and standards are being met and increasing! With the programs that they have been implementing tailored to their students, they are seeing the fruits of their labors.
BSUSD is a rural district located in eastern San Diego County and serves 395 students in grades K-12, approximately 40% of whom are English Learners and 90% are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Each year students in grades 3-8 and 11 are assessed on whether they are mastering rigorous state standards as measured by the Smarter Balanced Assessments in mathematics and in english and language arts. In 2018, 41% of Borrego students met or exceeded standards in English language arts, a 2% improvement from 2017! In mathematics, 25% of students met or exceeded standards, a 7% improvement from the previous year! BSUSD has shown growth over multiple years of Smarter Balanced testing as a result of their continued focus on standards-based instruction for all students and are very proud of these evolving results!
English learners are one of the largest subgroups of students in Borrego. English learners are assessed each year for language proficiency. In Borrego, over 72% of English learners scored either “well developed” or “moderately developed” in terms of their acquisition of English. In San Diego County, just 64% of English learners achieved these categories of language proficiency. Three out of four English learners are showing important progress in acquiring English in the district, a vital step in accessing more college and career ready courses!
BSUSD is proud to report that 9 out of 10 students graduate in 4 years compared to only 8 of 10 students graduating in 4 years in San Diego County. Graduation rates have risen steadily in the district over the past eight years as a result of creating a more coherent system for students to navigate in earning a high school diploma.
