RICHMOND, VA – Sticky Niches has officially launched The Payroll Launch Lab, a new training and community platform designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs start and grow independent payroll companies in an industry increasingly dominated by large national providers.
Created by payroll founder and advisor John Mason-Smith, widely known throughout the payroll industry as “JMS,” The Payroll Launch Lab was built to give hopeful founders practical guidance, operational tools, and access to experienced industry professionals who understand the realities of building a payroll business from the ground up. The program combines structured training, operational resources, vendor education, and a private founder community designed for entrepreneurs, sales professionals, accountants, insurance agencies, and others exploring payroll as a business opportunity.
As consolidation continues across the payroll and PEO industries, many businesses are seeking more personalized service models and niche-focused providers. The Payroll Launch Lab aims to lower the barrier to entry for entrepreneurs interested in building independent payroll firms with recurring revenue and long-term enterprise value.
“Most people overlook payroll because it’s not flashy,” said JMS. “But payroll is one of the stickiest business models out there. Once a company trusts you to handle something as important as paying their employees, they rarely want to switch. That creates an opportunity for independent operators who want to build stable, recurring revenue businesses with real long-term value.”
Unlike generalized business courses or franchise models, The Payroll Launch Lab focuses specifically on helping independent operators make key decisions when considering the launch of a local or niche-focused payroll firm.
“Starting an independent payroll company can feel overwhelming without the right guidance or community,” said Lori Brown, CEO of PayNW and President of the Independent Payroll Providers Association (IPPA). “The Payroll Launch Lab is helping lower that barrier and giving future owners a place to learn from people already in the industry.”
JMS brings firsthand industry experience to the platform, having previously built, scaled, and sold a payroll company. Today, he works with payroll and PEO firms nationwide on recruiting, growth strategy, acquisitions, and exit planning through HireWith and Astra Acquisitions.
He is widely known within the payroll industry for advising payroll and PEO firms on hiring, sales strategy, business growth, founder transitions, and sell-side M&A preparation. JMS also co-founded the Instant Payroll initiative at Signature Bank, helping advance faster, more modern payroll money movement solutions.
Early participants in the program say the platform significantly shortens the learning curve for people entering the industry.
“The Payroll Launch Lab gave me a complete understanding of the payroll service industry, its history, its players, its processes, its acronyms, and its nuances,” said Nate Pollak, General Manager and Head of GTM at Earnin Payroll. “In just a few sessions, I gained a practical foundation that prepared me to have meaningful conversations with key players across the industry.”
