Special Issue Released By Journal of International Students on Campus Readiness for International Student Success

6 January, 2017 – The Journal of International Students has released a special issue on International Student Success featuring a selection of research articles and commentaries to enhance institutional readiness for supporting and advancing the success of international students.

American Council on Education in its report Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses identified that “While efforts to recruit international students are on the rise, the data do not show a commensurate increase in support services for these students.” Another report Bridging the Gap: Recruitment and Retention to Improve International Student Experiences from NAFSA: Association of International Educators found that poor retention among international students shows a mismatch in expectations of students prior to enrollment and their actual experience once they are on campus.

Dr. Rahul Choudaha, the guest editor for the special issue of the Journal, urges institutions for doing more in supporting the success and inclusion of international students. “In addition to struggles with navigating a new culture and language, international students often pay more in tuition and receive less in services. It is an unfair imbalance which is not aligned with the institutional ethos and threatens the attractiveness of the U.S. as a destination for globally mobile students,” says Dr. Choudaha.

The Journal has its origins in providing more evidence on issues and challenges faced by international students and how educators and practitioners can provide effective support to address them. With this special issue, we are further advancing the research agenda and enhancing institutional practices with the aim of helping international students succeed in their academic and career pursuits,” says, Dr. Krishna Bista, founder/editor-in-chief of the Journal.

This special issue includes a collection of 17 articles from 31 authors. They address several research concerns related to international student success including leadership self-efficacy, writing proficiency, mentorship, retention, student satisfaction, sense of belongingness, plagiarism and career services.

The Journal of International Students is an academic, interdisciplinary, and peer-reviewed publication on international student affairs published from the United States of America.
