Spanish Dual Immersion Program Offered at Potrero Elementary

It’s no secret that the world is constantly changing, and with that includes changes in our communities, families, and jobs. As more and more English language learners make up the population of the United States, it is becoming increasingly more important for children to be bilingual. Potrero Elementary of the Mountain Empire Unified School District has recognized that need and is tackling that problem head-on with a Spanish Dual Immersion program.

The mission of Potrero Elementary is for all students to participate in a rigorous academic program where their learning needs are supported and prepare them for colleges and careers in the 21st century. The implementation of dual language immersion supports this mission by increasing student achievement and giving each student the gift of being bilingual and biliterate. Not only do students acquire dual language and literacy skills, but the programs also fosters an environment with diversity can be celebrated and a place where students will advocate for a safe, respectful, and responsible community.

The popularity of language immersion schools is likely to steadily increase as a global job market continues to open up new avenues in employment that require biliteracy in employees. Potrero Elementary is proud to prepare students for the future and to ensure students have the skills needed for modern jobs.  Biliteracy education is important, and many studies show the positive effects it can have on students’ educations and careers. Currently, Potrero has dual immersion programs classes for kinder through 3rd grade, with plans to expand their program to each grade.
