South Bay Union Families Have Access to Affordable Computers

Tools to Improve Learning at Home

The end of the school day does not, by any means, signify the end of a student’s daily opportunity to learn. Homework and take-home assignments are crucial components in maximizing a child’s experience in the classroom. More importantly, these tools provide a smooth bridge between the classroom and home settings, creating an all-encompassing learning environment.

With the increasing use of digital tools in the classroom, families without access to computer or internet have faced challenges with school projects and assignments. South Bay Union School District has partnered with a non-profit organization called Computers 2 San Diego Kids in order to offer these services at lower and more manageable costs. Various package options include computers, software, and/or internet usage.

In order to be eligible for these prices, a family must simply participate in one of the government subsidy programs: National Free School Lunch, SNAP, TANF, or Public Housing Assistance. With at least one child in a K-12 school, parents are easily able to apply for these packages in school offices throughout the district. Computer packages include both desktop and laptop options, offering prices as low as $80.

Over 200 families have received benefits from this initiative, along with access to one year of free technical support for their new devices. Computers are even loaded with basic software like Microsoft Office so that students can rapidly incorporate the new tools into their learning experiences.

South Bay Union will continue supporting those in our community who are less fortunate but still eager to learn. The value of a child’s education goes beyond what numbers can express. The district’s partnership with Computers 2 San Diego Kids is a testament to these ideals as well as an investment towards students’ future successes.
