TENNESSEE – Up-and-coming country and southern rock singer-songwriter Ethan Vincil debuts his single “Lonesome Drifter’s Son” on the DistroKid platform.
Growing up in a Christian household with his brother Garrett, Vincil attended church with his grandparents and discovered his aptitude for music as a member of the choir — sometimes singing solo for the congregation. Vincil shares, “I always felt a little different from everyone else. I tried playing sports like my older brother, but it just never really appealed to me for some reason. I always had trouble learning in school.”
At age ten, after receiving a diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, and a mild form of autism, Vincil and his parents looked for alternative outlets for his energy and talents. When he turned twelve, Vincil’s parents gifted him a Keith Urban flat-top guitar with an instructional DVD. From there, Vincil never looked back.
“I went to my room that night and learned ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ When I came out and played it for them they were shocked. I was self-taught for nine months. Mom and dad knew I was serious so I started taking lessons for a year at The Knoxville School of Rock. I stayed there for one year, then left and took lessons for nine months from Josh Hobbs at The Open Chord In Knoxville.”
Vincil’s first official gig was a birthday party for some friends. This led to more gigs at festivals and restaurants around East Tennessee. This year marks Vincil’s fourth year playing with his band at Rocking The Docks, his hometown’s biggest event.
While many people still view the spectrum as presenting limitations, Vincil prefers to embrace autism. He describes its advantages. “When you have autism, you tend to be really good at anything you love, and I loved playing Guitar. Then I started singing and playing. I want people to know: even when you grow up and have challenges, you can still do anything that you put your mind to. I hope other people, kids or adults that struggle with any kind of disability, will see me and be inspired that they too can do anything.”
DistroKid is an independent digital music distribution service founded in 2013 and focused on championing brand new music artists. Visit distrokid.com to hear Vincil’s single along with other DistroKid releases.
Vincil feels a sense of gratitude for an abundance of industry and community support. “I have had many teachers, principles, and business owners that have encouraged me and helped me along my journey. I am so grateful to the many seasoned musicians in my band for mentoring me and teaching me how to be a leader.”
