Songwriter Brian E. Smith aka B.E., agrees that Spotify and other music streaming services (DSPs) should offer the songwriting community a revenue share. “The fact that a majority of songwriters are making less than $1000 a year now across their catalog doesn’t bode well for the longevity of the profession.” He does clarify that in an off year for him he still makes above that amount. He goes on to state, “The labels are the first and loudest in negotiations. The PROs, publishers, and self-published writers should be cut in on a portion of the revenue accrued from the music streaming service providers even if it’s 1% or 2%.”
Brian began cutting demos in 2003, and was in talks with major publishers before deciding to self-publish. He has been credited on the Jeezy single ‘Jizzle’. He also has written for several indie artist and bands, while landing sync placements in films such as Gangland love Story starring Reagan Gomez, which was released by Maverick Entertainment, with the song “Give It Up” by Miss Gina. Brian states that he came to a cross road with facing headwinds with the onset of streaming. Stating, “It was a blessing in disguise, I was kind of struggling getting major placements, while I had all of this music. So I began self releasing the music I collaborated on through my label Bard Up Entertainment.” Though he states, “A stream still isn’t a download or a CD sale, if you know what I mean. But a stream is still almost the equivalent of the mp3 era as far as revenue when it comes to going Gold or Platinum. I think those who don’t create those kind of numbers still make a solid contribution to these DSPs through overall click thru and should share in that.”
Brian aka B.E. has recently released the album ‘Never The Same’ on his label. With other releases such ‘A Sip of E&J Vol. 1 and 2, and ‘Last Call’ by Duane Jackson (his frequent collaborator) which can be found on streaming services as well as his bandcamp page. He’s hoping for a resolution to the war going on against songwriters and their profession. Stating, “Having a revenue share put into a trust fund to subsidize songwriter’s healthcare, 401k, or pension shouldn’t be an afterthought.”
