Singapore Cardiologist Produces Guide to Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty

Dr. Michael MacDonald, a Singapore-based cardiologist, has produced a short article outlining how him and his fellow professionals find and treat coronary artery disease, and the different approaches to treatment.

As coronary artery disease increases worldwide, the need to find ways to educate people about taking preventative measures has become more acute for cardiologists. The consequences of coronary artery disease, if unchecked, can be devastating.

Dr. Michael MacDonald, a Singapore-based cardiologist, has produced a short article outlining how him and his fellow professionals find and treat coronary artery disease, and the different approaches to treatment. The article details the extreme and potentially fatal effects of the condition such as heart failure and coronary thrombosis, as well as making clear some of the milder symptoms that can be early indicators that there is a much more serious problem.

In an interview to promote his article, Dr. MacDonald adds that “when many people experience chest pain or a feeling of breathlessness they often brush it off and think nothing more of it. While it can sometimes be nothing more serious, these symptoms can also be vital early indicators of a much more serious underlying condition. In these situations, early intervention is key. Because of this, the purpose of my article is to educate people about the causes and symptoms of coronary artery disease in the hope that far more people can be effectively treated for this potentially fatal condition”.

Dr. MacDonald also added that “I feel the more that the cardiologist community can educate people about the dangers and signals of coronary artery disease, the more likely that people are to come forward and make us aware of symptoms early. This is vital for cardiologists to be able to treat people and in extreme situations, potentially save their life”.

An open discussion between a patient and a cardiologist about symptoms they have been experiencing is the first step in establishing the treatment path. ECG tests can then be carried out to electrically trace the beating of the heart in order to pickup any telltale signals as early as possible. Heart ultrasounds can also highlight any previous mild heart attacks that may indicate a risk of future more serious attacks.

Dr. MacDonald is also keen to stress how simple, quick and non-invasive the checks can be. “Many people are reluctant to come forward because they think that the procedures to uncover coronary artery disease take a lot of time or are complicated to carry out. This could not be further from the truth, and it is a tragic shame that so many people never come forward until it is very late or when something serious such as a heart attack has already occurred. But the reality is that a variety of tests can be painlessly and rapidly conducted around peoples’ busy lifestyles to see if there is a more serious underlying problem”.
