Yulian Mateo’s first short film, ‘Awakened,’ is gaining ground in Hollywood as the film wins a series of awards. The 17 min thriller has been nominated at eight film festivals and has won four so far, including Best Indie Short at the Los Angeles Film Awards, Best Indie Film at the Top Shorts Film Awards 2021, Best Drama at the Florence Film Festival, and Best Indie Short at the Imagine Rain Independent Film Awards, who described Awakened as “A gem of a film, it evokes incredible emotion through very quiet and thoughtful skill in cinema”.
‘Awakened’ tells the story of a man trying to understand the world in which he’s found himself, where he’s confronted with odd visions and the realities of his choices. Awakened is the first in a series of four short films centered around the central themes of loss and connection. The film may have been a reflection of Yulian’s own life. Born and brought up in the South Bronx, Yulian had to learn the importance of resilience at a very young age as a result of his tough upbringing. He had to quickly adapt to an ever-changing environment. After taking a multi-media class in high school, that resilience grew into ambition as he developed a love for film as the way to tell his stories.
While working his first job in New York, Yulian met Adam Race who shared the same creative passion with him. They quickly became friends and grew into business partners. Years later, Yulian and Adam founded Stonecutter Films to produce great narratives through film. They went on to produce their first film, ‘Awakened’ which has gone on to win them four awards. Adam, who is also the lead in Awakened, said “Yulian consistently challenges me creatively, always trying to push the human core in our work, and he has a special eye for capturing those elements on film. I’m encouraged everyday by his energy and it’s hard not to stay excited about the future for Stonecutter.”
Apart from his work as a director and cinematographer, Yulian is also a music producer and the founder of MX Media, a music production company. Manny Acosta, also known as Acosta Park and owner of Penthouse Recording Studios in New York City, said “Working with MX (Yulian) has been amazing, not only has he produced amazing video content for our artists, but he has also worked on numerous music production projects”. Acosta and Yulian have hosted some of the biggest stars at Penthouse including Pop Smoke, Lil TJay, Juice Wrld, DJ Khaled, Cardi B, DaBaby, Arcangel, Sech, A Boogie, G Eazy and many more.
Yulian and Stonecutter Films plan to continue the success of their short films, growing their work within the music business, and launching new projects within television programming.
