Schneider Electric has launched the Preventa XPS Universal safety modules series, which is raising the performance of safety modules for handling single safety functions in hardwired architectures on a new level.
Preventa XPS Universal combines the simplicity of application of hardwired safety modules with a diversity of messages, which has required in the past more complex and expensive fieldbus technology. With a simple point-to-point connection between the smart solid-state output of the modules and a digital input of a PLC via a simple wire, Preventa XPS Universal safety modules can send more than 40 different messages.(depending on the type)
With a smart auxiliary output the safety modules moreover provide information about coming test cycles and the amount of remaining cycles before reaching end of life time.
How does it work? The Preventa XPS Universal safety modules send modulated signals to the machine controller. The machine builder includes two function blocks in the machine controller’s program for decoding the signals. A library provides function blocks for all programming systems of Schneider Electric’s controllers and for the programming systems of the most common controllers on the market.
This makes Preventa XPS Universal safety modules the first choice for a broad range of simple to mid-complex machines: Easy to use, since the integration is still basing on hardwired connections and no fieldbus is needed.
Nevertheless, the modules provide a reply on the demand for more differentiated diagnostics information and approaches for predictive maintenance.
Each reference of the safety module family is adaptable to several safety functions. The selection of functionality can be done with fingers or a screw driver, turning rotary switches on the front. This multi-functionality is resulting in a reduced number of types to cover a broad range of safety functions, simplifying the spare part logistics and the documentation of a machine.
As usual at Schneider Electric for safety devices, Certified Safety Chain Solutions are available as well for Preventa XPS Universal safety modules. Schneider Electric´s Certified Safety Chain Solutions are applications examples, including an application architecture and the documentation. This helps to reliably create defined safety functions and to speed up the development of safe machines.
Some technical features of Preventa XPS Universal safety module series:
• Protection against unintended changes: Transparent sealable flap in front face to cover the selector switches from manipulation.
• Easy installation : Side connection for extension unit, no need for external wiring (except XPSUAB and XPSUEP).
• Wide time delay selection: Time delay selectable from 0.1 to 900 seconds for low and high inertia machines.
• Compact modules, flexible mounting: 22.5 and 45 mm width, DIN-rail or direct wall mounting (IP40 housing, IP20 terminals).
• Only 2 supply variants for all references: 24V AC/DC + wide range power supply 48…240V AC/DC
• Removable screw and spring terminal variants for all references
