Saving Detroit with a Second Chance: Two Charities to Organize Telethon to Raise Funds for Developing Vacant Neighborhood Properties

Detroit, MI – December 11, 2019 – Detroit has many things going for it, not least is the recent effort to upgrade its unused infrastructure for community welfare. Redeem Detroit, an established non-profit organization that works with teen parents, senior citizens and veterans, has partnered with Martin Evers Missionary Baptist Church, My Safe Haven, and other community stakeholders to renovate three buildings owned by the church on the same Gratiot Block to help each of their target demographic.

To fund the initiative, a telethon will take place on December 28, 2019 from 10am – 9pm at Martin Evers MBC located at 11111 Whittier Ave. The event will be hosted by Monique Owens, who just made history this year as the first Black Mayor of Eastpointe, a sister city of Detroit’s eastside. In attendance will be many Judges, politicians, and local celebrities.

One building will be dedicated to young mothers and their children ages 0-3, one building will be dedicated to senior citizens, and the other building will be dedicated to veterans. The projects are:

  • Project NOAH Baby Tech Center (for young mothers)
  • Ark Senior Center (for senior citizens)
  • Veterans of Detroit Resource Center (VDRC) (for veterans)

Says Rev. Alonzo Bell, Executive Director at Redeem Detroit: “The entire Bible is about second chances and redemption. So if you believe in the principles of God, then you should believe in Redeem Detroit, because the only way for Detroit to have better schools, better neighborhoods, and better government is through Redemption.”

The Project NOAH Baby Tech Center, spread across a 16,000 sq. ft building for which site control has been taken, is where mothers with children ages 0-3 years old can gather, thrive, and experience activities to advance their children through their first five stages of childhood development, including cognitive, social and emotional, speech, and fine and gross motor skills. The Center will be staffed with trainers, to show best practices. Accessible to young mothers during and after school and work hours, this place will also offer parenthood training. After the program, the children will be high school graduates who are enrolled in college with a career path to follow as well as employment.

The Ark Senior Center will be a place for seniors to meet and mingle with other seniors, volunteer, go on trips, socialize, use the computer, listen to music, play games, dance, and receive counseling services. The Ark Center will serve 30-40 seniors daily and free breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as free transportation.

Veterans of Detroit Resource Center will be a first point of contact for veterans needing to connect with nonprofit, employment, educational, training, and other VA resources. The Center will be dedicated to improving the lives of homeless or at-risk veterans and their families to provide pathways towards self-sufficiency.
