San Gabriel Valley to Get their Own Semi-Pro Team, Official Name to be Announced Soon

Sports fans of San Gabriel Valley can breathe easy, as their long wait for their very own local Pro team will soon be over. Emerald Sports and Entertainment has completed the purchase of territorial rights with the Professional Basketball Association, a semi-professional summer league that began play in 2021. The yet to be named team is currently investigating possible home courts to host games.

The new team will soon be holding a vote for giving itself an official name for this franchise on their Facebook page. The search for a head coach has already begun and tryouts are expected to be held with the new head coach prior to the start of the 2022 PBA season in May. As for locations, the ones currently in consideration include the cities of Claremont, La Verne, Monterey Park, and Pomona.

“We believe there is a lot of untapped talent in the area that would love to play at a competitive level with potential to be scouted to play overseas,” said team president, Roy Virgen. “Community-focused and affordable entertainment will be our draw as we look to primarily recruit local players. It is our goal to ensure games are played primarily on weekends so the players can focus on other responsibilities during the week, and we can draw in a maximum number of fans.”

The SGV Team’s basketball games are also slated to be streamed live on the internet radio station owned and operated by California Metropolitan University, a new online university in Montclair. The station, currently in beta testing, will be managed by students and play a mix of commercial Top 40, Alternative Rock, Electronica, and Underground Hip Hop. Founded in 2020, CMU’s focus has been on affordable online business programs. The university will be expanding in 2022 to include traditional classes, and programs in Sports Management and Leadership. Information about the school can be found at: www.cmu.ac
