Safer Lock partners with pharmacies to meet California requirement for safe medication storage

“Safer Lock\’s four-digit combination locking cap reduces diversion and accidental access to powerful medications”
The Safer Lock can help pharmacies in California comply with Assembly Bill No. 2859, which requires any pharmacy that dispenses Schedule II, III, or IV controlled substances to display safe storage products close to the pharmacy where medications are dispensed. The Safer Lock patented four-digit combination locking cap secures medications in individual bottles or larger lock boxes. Safe storage practices help protect teens and children from access to opioids or other powerful medications.

California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed Assembly Bill No. 2859, which requires any pharmacy that dispenses Schedule II, III, or IV controlled substances to display safe storage products close to the pharmacy where medications are dispensed. This legislation is intended to help parents safeguard powerful medications that are vital to managing certain chronic pain conditions among adults. Increasing safe storage practices among parents is an important component of protecting teens and children from the dangers of opioid abuse,

The Safer Lock®, a patented four-digit combination locking cap, fulfills the requirement that pharmacies offer safe storage products. The Safer Lock cap is sold with a medication-safe bottle and can also retrofit many existing pharmaceutical bottles used in pharmacies today. Also, the Safer Lock Box can secure multiple individual bottles in a food grade box secured by the locking cap. Patients create and set their personal combination from 10,000 possibilities. Safer Lock will open when it’s on the correct combination, which helps keep non-patients from pilfering medication without detection. Safer Lock has been certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission as child-resistant and senior-friendly.

AB 2859 requires safe storage products in pharmaceutical “chains” of three or more pharmacies owned by the same entity.  While compliance is not required in individual pharmacies, the Safer Lock offers safe storage solutions in pharmacies of all sizes.

Safer Lock locking caps and lock boxes are currently available to pharmacies at wholesale pricing and will also be available to pharmacies through Amerisource Bergen by January, 2019.
