Russia’s Top Farm Export Now Vegetable Oils

MOSCOW – Russia’s agricultural exports have reached a historic turning point. According to the latest data from the Russian Federal Center for Agricultural Exports, in the first eight months of 2025, export revenue from the oil and fat industry has, for the first time, surpassed that of traditional staple grains. With an 8% lead, it has become the new pillar of the country’s agricultural export earnings. By the end of September, the total export value in this sector had exceeded $6 billion.

The export structure of seven key oil and fat products shows a tiered distribution: Sunflower oil holds the top position by a wide margin, followed by rapeseed oil, Oilseed Meal and cake, soybean oil, margarine, mayonnaise, and linseed oil. Notably, while the total export volume of vegetable oils fell 24% year-on-year to 4.34 million tons, performance varied significantly by type. The export volume of the leading product, sunflower oil, contracted by 36% to 2.75 million tons, whereas rapeseed oil exports defied the trend, growing 31% to reach 1.07 million tons.

Oilseed exports showed divergent trends among the three main types:

Sunflower seed exports surged, with shipments in the first nine months reaching 258,000 tons, a 34% increase year-on-year. Over 80% were destined for member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

  • Soybean exports totaled 457,000 tons, down 27% year-on-year, with China remaining the largest buyer, purchasing 332,000 tons.
  • Rapeseed exports reached 437,000 tons, with orders almost entirely covered by Belarus (358,000 tons) and China (67,000 tons).
  • Meanwhile, linseed exports remained stable at 612,000 tons. The Chinese market absorbed 422,000 tons, followed by Belgium with 71,000 tons.

Industry observers note that this shift in export structure reflects the upgrading and transformation of Russia’s agricultural processing industry. As the deep-processing supply chain for oils and fats continues to improve, higher value-added products are gradually replacing raw material exports, becoming a new engine driving agricultural economic growth. If this trend consolidates, it could reshape the global vegetable oils trade landscape.
