Rock Hill F.A.R.M.S. Recognized for Making a Positive Impact by NBA Legend and Social Justice Philanthropist Jrue Holiday

According to the USDA Black farmers are a dying breed accounting for less than 2 percent of the agricultural community in the U.S.  Those 48,000 Black producers need a voice to promote their best interests and F.A.R.M.S. is uniquely positioned to explain their plight.  The community minded organization received the welcomed news, that they were chosen as one of 50 Black led organizations to receive a grant from the Jrue & Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund.

The Family Agriculture Resources Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.), serves the community by providing legal services for Black farmers who are disproportionately affected by adverse conditions leading to scores of farmers losing the land they owned for generations.  The award-winning organization helps farmers stay free of foreclosure while also providing much needed food in their client’s rural communities.  Since 2013, this grassroots powerhouse has distributed more than $200,000 in emergency monies and donated 1.5 million pounds of produce.

Founding director Jillian Hishaw is encouraged by the donation and recognition by the Jrue & Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund saying “We are elated to be chosen as 1 of 50 Black business participants!  This donation will help us protect many more Black farms legally and donate from produce in rural farming communities across the US.”

The charitable fund was started in 2020 by legendary basketball player Jrue Holiday and his wife, two-time Olympic gold medalist Lauren Holiday.  The 6’3” Milwaukee Bucks defender donated the remainder of his NBA annual salary to give Black businesses and organizations a leg up.  The pair were compelled to come to the aid of Black businesses who were systematically marginalized and through this round of funding, the foundation is distributing one million dollars in unrestricted funds among 25 Black owned businesses and 25 Black-led nonprofit organizations.

In 2020 F.A.R.M.S., received the Unsung Business Award from Shea Moisture and the Black Business Relief Award from We Buy Black and Shea Moisture.  Hishaw is grateful for all of the recent attention afforded to Black farmers and looks forward to a brighter future for the farming community.
