SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – November 5, 2026 – A statewide California electric vehicle incentive built only for rideshare drivers is now taking applications. Rideshare Incentives for Driving Electric (RIDE), a statewide program established by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), opened on November 2, 2026. It helps eligible drivers who work with HopSkipDrive, Lyft or Uber buy or lease an electric car and pay part of the cost of charging it.
The amounts are set by the CPUC. Eligible drivers can receive up to $20,300 toward the purchase or lease of a new electric vehicle, or up to $14,200 toward a used one. Drivers who receive a vehicle incentive also qualify for up to $1,170 a year toward charging, for up to four years, as long as they keep meeting the program rules and renew each year. The CPUC approved these amounts in Resolution TL-19156 on July 2, 2026.
RIDE is narrow by design. To qualify, a driver must have a household income at or below 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level and must have completed at least 4,500 passenger trips across participating rideshare platforms in the past 12 months. Drivers do not count their own trips: the program administrator, the nonprofit Center for Sustainable Energy, verifies them with the rideshare companies. Only battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles qualify. The program’s terms and conditions exclude plug-in hybrids, do not allow private-party sales, and require the driver to keep the car and keep driving it on a rideshare platform for 36 months. Drivers who already own and drive a zero-emission vehicle for a rideshare platform are not eligible.
The money is limited. The CPUC set the program’s Year 1 budget at $25 million, of which $22.65 million is for incentives. The resolution estimates that this covers approximately 1,050 incentives of $20,300 for a new vehicle. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and depend on available funding. The program runs until its annual funding is exhausted or until March 11, 2029, whichever comes first.
The order of steps matters. The CPUC strongly encourages drivers to pre-qualify before they shop. An approved driver receives a RIDE pre-qualification ID, and the program reserves the incentive for 90 days. At a participating dealership, the incentive can be applied directly to the purchase or lease. Drivers can also apply after buying, but the CPUC warns that those who buy before qualifying risk being found ineligible. Applications are made at RIDEca.org.
RIDE can be combined with other programs. The CPUC says RIDE incentives can be combined with certain local, utility and other electric vehicle incentive programs, and the program’s terms allow incentives from state agencies, utilities and other entities, including vehicle scrappage incentives such as Clean Cars 4 All. The total of all incentives cannot exceed the cost of the vehicle. A driver buying a first zero-emission vehicle may also look at the state’s MyFirstEV discount, which the California Air Resources Board says can be stacked with non-CARB incentives; MyFirstEV is limited to people who have never owned a zero-emission vehicle. In PG&E territory, the Pre-Owned EV Rebate pays up to $4,000 for a used EV, and its $1,000 Standard rebate takes complete applications only until November 11, 2026.
RIDE is paid for by a per-trip regulatory fee that rideshare customers pay and rideshare companies collect under California’s Clean Miles Standard.
DuloCore, an independent guide to California home-energy and EV incentives, has published a plain-language page on the rideshare driver EV rebate in California: who qualifies, how to apply, how the money runs out, and how RIDE combines with MyFirstEV, Clean Cars 4 All and PG&E rebates. Every figure on the page is checked against the CPUC and the program administrator. The page is free to read.
Drivers should confirm current amounts and eligibility with the program before they buy.
