Richard P. Jean of Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School announces the iLounge

Principal at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, Richard P. Jean, reaches another milestone with the introduction of the iLounge

Sequel to the launch of the integration of the use of the iPad in the school about a year ago, Richard P. Jean, the principal at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches has again demonstrated his passion for pushing boundaries with the launch of the iLounge.

The introduction of the iLounge is in line with the passionate educator’s desire to integrate Apple technology into the Archbishop McCarthy culture, a goal he was able to achieve in less than two years. “People told me it could not be done,” stated Jean. “That made me more determined,” he continued.

With the support of a strong team at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, Jean has been able to make a huge difference in a relatively short while, taking the biggest possible bite of the Apple. Unlike many educators, Jean and his team have taken the bull by the horns to take on new challenges.

“Some educators are nervous about trying something new, never mind implementing it and many educators come from the Do Not Touch generation,” Jean stated. “This generation is about touch this, touch that and they don’t hold back. Just watch how fast a student can fly through their iPhone or iPad,” continued Jean.

“As educators, we have to lead by example; be up to speed. We have to teach students the most effective way to learn, provide them the best opportunities and help them be as prepared as possible to face college and the world in which they will navigate.”

The recently introduced iLounge, formerly known as the Library/Media Center, mirrors a university setting where students sit on couches, rugs, or chairs. The iLounge gives students access to ebooks for 30 days, while also allowing them to work on projects via their iPad and share ideas with fellow students. “This is the ‘new’ way student’s research – sitting on a rug, not getting off the couch,” said Jean.

In addition to the launch of the iPad, Jean, in line with his goal of developing and enhancing Archbishop McCarthy “culture of technology” has made several other amazing contributions to the school. Some of such contributions include the installation of Apple TV’s in every classroom and hiring Les Brown to be Archbishop McCarthy’s 21st Century Instruction and Learning Coordinator. Other contributions include the installation of a state-of-the-art security system and the unveiling of a new website – www.mccarthyhigh.org.
