RICE ELEMENTARY IN CHULA VISTA CELEBRATES 80 YEARS OF EDUCATION AND CARE FOR LOCAL STUDENTS

Lilian J. Rice Elementary School of the Chula Vista Elementary School District is celebrating 80 years of serving Chula Vista students. Originally named L Street School, Rice Elementary was completed in 1938 and renamed after the architect who designed the campus, Lilian J. Rice, in 1944. Students, families, alumni, and current and former staff helped make the 80th anniversary celebration of Lilian J. Rice Elementary a success.

Principal Veronica Konkoly noted that the celebration honored not only the school, but also paid tribute to a prominent female architect who was ahead of her time. Lilian J. Rice was known for designing homes for many celebrities of her time in Rancho Santa Fe, but her talents also graced many school campuses, including Lilian J. Rice Elementary. The celebration included booths, food, and a beautiful art gallery that included portraits of Lilian J. Rice. The Chula Vista High Mariachi Ensemble and the Rice Student Choir were among the featured performance groups.

“One of the special feelings we have from being here at Rice is the wonderful legacy,” Principal Konkoly said. “With 80 years of educating our children, we often run into people who taught or went to school here and some who were a principal or assistant principal here. It has been wonderful seeing so many of them here at this event.”

Rice Elementary School is an innovative, nurturing, and diverse community committed to raising and empowering the leaders of tomorrow. Rice operates on the pillars of academic rigor, personal integrity, and civic responsibility with a mission to support their students and helping them to love to learn and to respect others.
