Research Analysis of Humic Acid in Heavy Metal Chelation and Soil Remediation

With the rapid development of industrialization and intensive agriculture, soil heavy metal pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental issue. The mechanisms by which humic acid reduces the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil are diverse and synergistic.

Firstly, chelation and complexation play a major role. The abundant functional groups in humic acid can react with heavy metal ions such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) through coordination reactions, forming stable and water-insoluble humic acid–metal complexes, thereby significantly reducing the concentration of free heavy metal ions in soil.

Secondly, physical adsorption contributes to heavy metal immobilization. Humic acid possesses a loose porous structure and a large specific surface area, allowing it to adsorb heavy metal ions through surface interactions and limit their migration and diffusion within the soil environment.

Meanwhile, humic acid can regulate soil pH, promote the formation of soil aggregates, and improve soil physicochemical properties. These effects facilitate the transformation of active exchangeable heavy metal forms into more stable residual forms, fundamentally reducing their bioavailability to plants.

In addition, humic acid can enhance soil microbial activity and optimize microbial community structure.
