On February 21, 2019, Smart Coos’ 90-day celebration leading up to International Mother Language Day will culminate in the announcement of the First Annual National Bilingual Bee & Biliteracy Competition. The National Bilingual Bee & Biliteracy Competition will assess children’s proficiency in English along with one of these languages: Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish or Haitian Creole. Participants must be between ages 6-15, who are proficient in more than one language or enrolled in a dual language / world language program at their school. Early Bird registration will open on February 21, 2019 on International Mother Language Day. The Competition will be held on June 1, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York. Participants are expected from all five-boroughs and the tri-state area.
Of the company’s overall objective to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual education, Smart Coos CEO Mirta Desir said, “Over the past 3 years Smart Coos has provided bilingual instruction to 1000s of children in NYC and across the nation in both their heritage language and English. Because of this experience we know that this is the time to bring all student language learners together to celebrate the beauty of each language, culture and diversity,” said Desir. “This is why we’ve actively celebrated International Mother Language Day for the last 90-days and why each year Smart Coos will increase the number of languages that are available in the Bilingual Bee & Biliteracy Competition.”
Registration for the First Annual National Bilingual Bee & Biliteracy Competition opens on February 21, 2019 on the Biliteracy Bee website (http://www.biliteracybee.com/). The event is expected to see participation from a diverse group of students with a multi-lingual and cross-cultural composition. Registration is open to students from schools, organizations and home-schooled children throughout New York City, the tri-state area and the nation.
