Red Cross Victims with Homes Destroyed by Fire Given New Homes

A group of anonymous donors and volunteers partnered with the American Red Cross to provide funding to purchase homes for Red Cross victims who had their homes destroyed by fire. The group consists mostly of business owners located in different areas across the country. Some members of the group provide funding while other members help raise funds from their local communities.

Amanda Edwards, executive director of the Asheville-Mountain Area American Red Cross in North Carolina, says the Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters each year, the vast majority of which are house fires.

“While media headlines rightfully focus on huge natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and windstorms, Red Cross responds more to single-family dwelling fires,” said John Jones, American Red Cross disaster program manager in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The group has an estimated $2,000,000 in funding for the next year to purchase homes for Red Cross victims. Victims must satisfy several criteria before being qualified to receive assistance from the group, including owning the home that was destroyed, the home being a total loss, and not having insurance to cover the loss.

Brandon Lewis, President of Lewis Revenue Group in Greensboro, North Carolina, is the home purchasing coordinator. He works as the liaison between the Red Cross and the group of donors and volunteers providing the funding. Lewis helps select a house for each victim based on the pre-determined budget for each victim. He then helps facilitate the purchase of the home for the victims.

“I am extremely happy to be a part of this. For years I have procrastinated about making time to do something more meaningful and fulfilling,” Lewis said. “I’m now a part of something that is going to have a massive impact on people’s lives. Without our help, many of these victims would have had no choice but to start completely over in life, with little to nothing to their name.”

Next year the group plans to significantly increase the amount of funding available to help Red Cross victims. The goal for next year is to have $10,000,000 in funding available.
