Prairie Craft Spirits Association stepping up to help with hand sanitizer shortage during COVID-19

The Prairie Craft Spirits Association members now making hand sanitizer

To address the rising shortage of hand sanitizer, members of the Prairie Craft Spirits Association in Saskatchewan have started making more than just spirits. Adam Sperling, President of the Association knew they had to do something to help with the shortage.

Having the available resources and equipment to provide such a necessity to protect against the spread of the virus. Following guidelines from the World Health Organization, the liquid hand sanitizer is glycerin based and is 80 per cent alcohol.

Free Hand Sanitizer for Emmergency Responders

They are offering free of charge to emergency responders, RCMP, doctors and nurses. “They are doing their part to keep us safe during this time, if we can do our part by providing hand sanitizer free of charge to keep them safe, that means something to us.” A member of the association expressed.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak, Health Canada temporarily changed the regulations around the production of hand sanitizer and personal protective gear to address the urgent need for the products, allowing member companies to get it made quickly. Proper labelling is also not required, but only temporarily.

Other Alternative

Although the hand sanitizer is a necessary protective product, it is still very important to still wash your hands. The provincial government still recommends hand washing with soap and hot water for 20 seconds as the most effective way to prevent the spread of Corona Virus.

Saskatchewan has really stepped up to do their part to keep the spread of COVID-19 at bay. With under 300 cases (A count of 253 as of April 7, 2020) and 3 deaths total, using hand sanitizer and being able to provide it free of charge is essential in helping to flatten the curve. Some local businesses, big box stores and online platforms are selling a small bottle of the product for as much as $30 a bottle.

The Association’s Philosophy

“Operate your business in an honest, transparent and non-deceptive fashion. Inform consumers truthfully and accurately about the sources and methods used to make your spirits. Display fair dealing and respect toward your fellow members.” – The Prairie Craft Spirits Association’s philosophy.

If you are an emergency responder, RCMP, doctor or nurse please contact one of the listed breweries or distilleries listed above to pick up or make delivery arrangements of your hand sanitizer. The general public is asked to call to check stock as priority will be given to first responders.
