Palmdale School District Increases Efforts with Parent Engagement and Community Involvement to Better Schools

At Palmdale School District, parent involvement and engagement is an important part of how each school in the district runs. Many efforts are made to include parents in as much district decision-making as possible as part of the Palmdale PROMISE to prepare students for the future. Parents in the Palmdale School District are also able to rally together with various groups and associations to ensure their children are a part of a loving and progressive educational community.

Some of the ways that parents or guardians can engage in their children’s education is through one of the many parent groups at school sites such as ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee), AAPAC (African American Parent Advisory Committee), as well as the SSC (School Site Councils).  District parent groups include our DELAC (District English Learner Advisory Committee) and AAAC (African American Advisory Council) Each parent group provides a resource for families pertaining to the needs of their students. Other groups include the PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) and the SAC (Superintendent Advisory Committee).

Palmdale School District also provides Parent Centers where parents and guardians have access to tools needed for them to be successful, just like their students. Every school site has, or will soon have, a Parent Center- a room dedicated to the betterment of parents, where they can use computers, receive information on training available to them, and are made welcome. There is also a District Parent Center that offers training including GED and ESL (English as a Second Language) for Adults.

Parent-Community Liaisons at every school site network with parents, the community, and the school as a point person between everyone and also ensures information is conveyed properly. These Parent-Community Liaisons are a huge part of Palmdale PROMISE and help to create a united feeling at the schools.

Parent involvement and engagement is crucial to student achievement. It boosts enrollment, attendance, and parents’ confidence in the education their children recieve. Students who have involved parents or guardians are shown to have higher grades, better social skills, and improvements in behavioral issues. All of these aspects are a part of the Palmdale PROMISEthat provides Palmdale School District students with an excellent well-rounded education.
