Executive Summary
Offshore wind energy/power harvesting involves the use of wind farms constructed offshore in a water body, usually a continental shelf in the ocean. The term ‘offshore’ does not necessarily mean off the shore of the sea, however, and an offshore wind farm can be built over water bodies like lakes, fjords and sheltered coastal areas. The purpose is similar to regular wind farms who harvest wind energy and convert it to usable electrical energy; the difference lies in the location of the wind farm. Wind speeds are higher offshore and closer to the ocean than on land, which is why an offshore wind turbine’s electricity generation is higher as compared to one on land, per amount of capacity installed.
Although yield is high, offshore wind technology is still in its early years of development and growth, probably owing to the fact that it costs more than land wind farms to construct. However, the costs have been decreasing rapidly in the past few years owing to the advancement in technology.
Northern Europe currently hosts the largest offshore wind farms, with two-thirds of the total number of installed offshore wind farms in the world located in Germany and the United Kingdom alone. As of September 2018, United Kingdom has the largest wind farm in the world, which generates 659 MW.
