This month, Novato Unified School District (NUSD) completed year two of a three-year rollout of Chromebooks to provide students with continuous access to a variety of resources. In August of 2019, NUSD will complete the rollout so that every student in grades 3-12 will have Chromebooks. The first wave of device roll-outs occurred in the 2017-2018 school year at the 5th, 6th and 9th grade levels. These grades were chosen to receive their devices first to ensure that there was a teacher from each school site that can serve as a mentor for other teachers integrating the technology into their classroom.
The dramatic increase in digital devices has transformed the type and nature of work that students are assigned and are capable of. It has required schools to shift the way students are prepared for this new environment. Novato Unified recognizes that in this age, access to digital technology in the classroom is essential to provide its students with the skills needed to be effective members of the new digital community we live in. Teachers will now focus more instruction on the integration of technology, as well as focus on project-based learning that amplifies learning associated with the use of devices.
The Chromebooks will travel with the student to be used at school, home, and anywhere else learning may occur. Something unique about NUSD’s 1:1 technology is that students will not be required to return the Chromebook at the end of the school year. Instead, students will keep the same Chromebook over each summer until they leave the school in 5th, 8th and 12th grades. The District believes that this will combat the tendency students have to lose some of the achievement gained during the previous school year during the summer and will also encourage a sense of ownership with the devices. This ownership will foster a sense of responsibility in the students, resulting in better care of the devices.
Novato Unified School District is excited to enable their students to have access to learning 24/7 without borders or boundaries because of the Chromebooks. The District hopes these devices will instill a love of learning in the students and that they will enhance students’ ability to locate information, evaluate it, synthesize it, and communicate with others.
